JOIN THE 11+ REASONING COURSE AT TREFOIL TUTORS - NEW YEAR 4 GROUP LESSONS AVAILABLE

Imran, Jan. 13, 2026

We are delighted to share the news that starting in January 2026, our Lead Reasoning and Science tutor Rebecca begins teaching the Year 4 Reasoning course as part of our 11+ preparation course.

Our Year 4 Reasoning course is designed to establish strong foundations and prepare students for their 11+ examinations to Grammar and Independent Schools. Throughout Years 4, 5 and 6, the course covers verbal and non-verbal reasoning topics as well as preparation for Quest Assessments and the General Paper which are part of the 11+ process to a number of top Independent Schools in the area.

In recent years, we have seen an increased focus on Reasoning in 11+ entrance processes, with Reasoning having become a component of almost all of the 11+ entrance examinations in the area. Some schools choose to use traditional verbal and non-verbal examinations, similar in style to CEM and GL papers; a number of Independent Schools have created their own General Papers to test the depth and richness of their understanding rather than how quickly and accurately they can compute learnt processes. Finally, a growing list of schools in the local area are now using the Quest Assessment format. The Reasoning course at Trefoil Tutors is designed to prepare students for the Reasoning element within all three aforementioned assessment styles.

In addition to the traditional verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions, our Reasoning course covers many of the required skills for the second part of the Quest Assessment, which includes the Creative Comprehension and Puzzles and Problem Solving sections. Our team of tutors have been developing resources in the Year 5 course, where students learn to read and interpret multiple sources of information, analyse using numbers and tackle spatial reasoning questions. To further enhance our Reasoning course we have introduced weekly booklets in the Year 6 Autumn Term lessons, practising creative comprehension, problem solving and puzzles. This gives students a good flavour of the variety of sources and materials they could be asked to use so that they can approach this section with confidence. This will also supplement the support for students preparing for the General paper at Merchant Taylors’ School.

The Year 4 Reasoning lessons take place at the following times:
Wednesday 4:40pm - 6:10pm
Thursday 4:40pm - 6:10pm

The lessons will take place in a small group of six students, thus allowing the tutor to offer each student one-to-one support as well as work with the group. Each lesson is 90 minutes long. Each term consists of twelve lessons, with a half-term break after 6 weeks. Each student’s progress is also monitored on a weekly basis through homework assignments, which are marked and returned with comprehensive feedback, as well as two assessments during the 12 week period. In addition, students’ parents are provided with feedback on their child’s progress at the end of the term. All lesson materials are accessible via our online portal.

Rebecca Wolffe is our Director of Studies and Lead Tutor of Science and Reasoning. Rebecca closely monitors our students’ academic progress and offers advice throughout the academic year. Rebecca has a BSc (ARCS) in Biochemistry from Imperial College, London, a PGCE through the Teach First Programme and a postgraduate qualification in Educational Leadership from the Institute of Education. With thirteen years of teaching experience, Rebecca brings extensive leadership experience to Trefoil from her roles at schools as Lead Practitioner and Director of Science.
