Tutors attend Professional Development Seminar on Child Protection

On the 8th of December, we hosted our second Professional Development Seminar as part of our Professional Development Programme for tutors. In the seminar, our senior tutor, Vivek Gathani, discussed our Code of Conduct with the tutors and analysed potential situations that may arise when working with children.

At Trefoil Tutors, tutor development and child protection are two cornerstones of the professionalism that we bring to tutoring and we were delighted that so many of our team were able to join us!

EDUCATIONAL Q&A VIDEO 20: Analysis of grammar school entrance results

With our Year 6 students having received their grammar school 11+ entrance results, we carried out some analysis and made comparisons between these and the results students achieved in the mock independent school papers (completed at Trefoil). Our senior tutor Vivek Gathani shares his conclusions and comments on comparing the students' results across both papers as well as providing some useful tips for the Year 5 students preparing for their examinations in 2019.

IGCSE Mathematics Mock Examinations

We are currently registering students for the final places in our IGCSE Mathematics mock examinations tailored specifically to students sitting their exam early, in January 2019. Modelled on new specification IGCSE papers, the mock examinations are written by Vivek Gathani, our lead Mathematics tutor who is a qualified teacher with four years of experience teaching at Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School and will take place during the Christmas holidays at our premises in Elstree (5 Theobald Court, Theobald Street, WD6 4RN).

Places are limited and booked on a first-come, first-served basis.

The students will have the opportunity to sit a different Mathematics mock paper each day.

Following enquiries from a number of parents, we are delighted to inform you that during the Christmas holidays, we will be running Mathematics mock examinations for pupils who are preparing to sit their IGCSE Mathematics examinations in January 2019.

Early school starts may be detrimental to students' mental health

New research has shown that early school starts affect students' health as well as concentration levels. When entering early adulthood, students' ideal wake and sleep times gradually become later. Early school starts often means that students lose between 2-2.7 hours of sleep a day, which affects brain development and has been linked to the activation of genes associated with mental illness.

WINNERS OF THE BREAKTHROUGH PRIZE 2019 ANNOUNCED

Although relatively new initiative, the Breakthrough Prize is one of the largest prizes offered in Science – every year, it awards scientists in Mathematics, Fundamental Physics and Life Sciences for making significant contributions to our understanding of the world. Those of our students who take a particular interest in these fields might find it interesting to look at the winners of the prize and familiarise themselves with the current leading ideas in the science sector!

This year, winners were celebrated for breakthroughs in gene therapy, discovery of a new class of electronic materials and developments in mathematical theory.

11+ MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH MOCK EXAMINATIONS

We were delighted to see so many of our Year 6 students attending the 11+ mock examinations we held during the half-term holidays. We would like to remind parents of the final places available in the upcoming mock exams that will take place in December and January.

The mock examinations are modelled on 11+ entrance examination papers to independent schools in the area and are written by our lead tutors Vivek Gathani and Milda Sabunaite.
