Educational Q&A video 19: Join our team as a group Mathematics or Economics tutor!

With over 200 students attending our small group lessons, we are delighted to share an exciting opportunity to join our team of tutors in this week's video!

We are looking for a Mathematics tutor and an Economics tutor to run small group lessons at our office in Elstree. The ideal candidate will be a qualified teacher or have extensive teaching experience in a school environment.

With a fixed, term-time only timetable, access to high quality resources and a full-time admin support team, the role is focused on delivering specialised classroom teaching to small groups of up to six students in a tailored classroom space.

IGCSE MOCK EXAMINATIONS

Following enquiries from a number of parents, we are delighted to inform you that during the Christmas holidays, we will be running Mathematics mock examinations for pupils who are preparing to sit their IGCSE Mathematics examinations in January 2019.

The mock examinations are modelled on new specification IGCSE papers. The Mathematics mock examination papers are written by Vivek Gathani, our lead Mathematics tutor who is a qualified teacher with four years of experience teaching at Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School.

Early school starts may be detrimental to students' mental health

New research has shown that early school starts affect students' health as well as concentration levels. When entering early adulthood, students' ideal wake and sleep times gradually become later. Early school starts often means that students lose between 2-2.7 hours of sleep a day, which affects brain development and has been linked to the activation of genes associated with mental illness.

Sample Oxford interview questions released

Students applying to study at the University of Oxford next year will be attending their interviews at the start of December. Those currently preparing to be interviewed, or those simply curious about the types of questions that come up in these interviews might find it interesting to have a look at the sample questions the university has recently released in order to make the process more transparent. The questions are categorised by subject and also include comments from university tutors regarding the reasoning behind the questions as well as their expectations from the interviewee.

WINNERS OF THE BREAKTHROUGH PRIZE 2019 ANNOUNCED

Although relatively new initiative, the Breakthrough Prize is one of the largest prizes offered in Science – every year, it awards scientists in Mathematics, Fundamental Physics and Life Sciences for making significant contributions to our understanding of the world. Those of our students who take a particular interest in these fields might find it interesting to look at the winners of the prize and familiarise themselves with the current leading ideas in the science sector!

This year, winners were celebrated for breakthroughs in gene therapy, discovery of a new class of electronic materials and developments in mathematical theory.

11+ MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH MOCK EXAMINATIONS

We were delighted to see so many of our Year 6 students attending the 11+ mock examinations we held during the half-term holidays. We would like to remind parents of the final places available in the upcoming mock exams that will take place in December and January.

The mock examinations are modelled on 11+ entrance examination papers to independent schools in the area and are written by our lead tutors Vivek Gathani and Milda Sabunaite.
